From the first time I had to stand up and speak in front of people, I had this uncontrollable fear of public speaking. I couldn’t even introduce myself from my seat without feeling like my heart would explode. I could never understand it because I don’t scare easily. There were times I would take an “F” on a project if it involved speaking on front of a group. As I got older, I attempted to confront it without much success. Fortunately, a supervisor suggested Toastmasters. It took a while, but the first time I realized I was speaking without being nervous, I wanted to do a back flip. It was the most liberating feeling in the world. I still get nervous from time to time, but Toastmaster’s has taught me how to overcome these fears. Since joining Toastmasters three years ago, I’ve given more than 30 speeches at our club, won two speaking contests, and recently receiving the Advanced Communicator Silver Toastmasters designation. I’ve also received my Competent Leader designation, and I am the current President of club 6261. In July, I start as Area Governor supporting area 30.

Because of what Toastmasters has given me, I intend to be a lifelong member and help as many others as I can. I thought nothing could be better than the feeling of accomplishment I had when I overcame my fears. Well I’ve found it. Helping others and watching them overcome their fears is even better than overcoming your own. It truly is better to give than to receive.
